Welcome to E Smith and Son

Suppliers of quality bedding plants and hanging baskets since 1959

E Smith and Son is a local family business, started in 1959, when Edwin rented a patch of land in Statham and began to grow bedding plants. A couple of years later he bought two acres of green field on Booths Lane, our present site, and set about building glasshouses, a home for his family and growing his plants.
Over 60 years on, Edwin and Barbara are no longer with us, the nursery has doubled in size, and we are continuing to grow the plants that Dad loved. Derek and Sarah continue the day to day running of the nursery, with Andy joining us front of house in summer 2023.

E SMITH AND SON …… IT’S ALL ABOUT SPRING 2024

Spring is on the way! The days are getting longer, the birds are singing, and we are busy sowing seeds. While the weather has been cold and wet and windy, we have been busy on the nursery – not just the usual preparation for spring but renovation and upgrading of the glasshouses and polytunnels as well. Down on the nursery we have a full greenhouse of primroses – over 30 different varieties and colours. The first early ones are ready for sale now, but in a couple of weeks we will be showcasing as many of them as we can …. our PRIMROSE FESTIVAL, in our refurbished polytunnel – an excellent space to grow and show off our produce! Keep watching on social media for dates for the festival.

As well as primroses, we have planted bulbs growing nicely, snowdrops, crocus and daffodils. Our seed department will be replenished in the next week, with fresh stock for this season. Compost, pots, labels, string, plant supports and plant food all available in our sundries department, just ready for when the sun comes out and it is warm enough to make a start in the garden, the allotment, the greenhouse and the potting shed! We can’t wait!!!

Pop in and see us – you’ll be surprised at the range of stock we carry!
