Suppliers of quality bedding plants and hanging baskets since 1959
E Smith and Son is a local family business, started in 1959, when Edwin rented a patch of land in Statham and began to grow bedding plants. A couple of years later he bought two acres of green field on Booths Lane, our present site, and set about building glasshouses, a home for his family and growing his plants.
Over 60 years on, Edwin and Barbara are no longer with us, the nursery has doubled in size, and we are continuing to grow the plants that Dad loved. Derek and Sarah continue the day to day running of the nursery, with Andy joining us front of house in summer 2023.
E SMITH AND SON …… IT’S ALL ABOUT AUTUMN 2025
It’s been a hot dry summer, and while we have all enjoyed the sunshine, the plants have struggled with the heat and the water – or lack of it. Those of you who have managed to keep up with the watering have been rewarded with fantastic blooms this year – especially pelargonium/geranium. There have been some incredible hanging baskets around! But the days are getting shorter, the nights cooler and the rains are coming. It’s time to think about autumn planting. There is still lots of colour to be had – the late flowering perennials (dahlias, asters, rudbeckia, echinacea) are still looking amazing, and still available to buy – get them in the ground before it gets too cold so they get a good start for next year. Fresh new stock available now includes pansy and viola – their cheerful little faces keep going throughout the autumn and into the winter. We will also have available in a couple of weeks Bellis daisy, Wallflower, Polyanthus – all good hardy plants. Cyclamen are coming on also, for autumn plantings.
Looking ahead for spring, start planning your bulb display now! We have a good range of Snowdrop, Crocus, Grape Hyacinth, Daffodil and Naricissus, and Tulips, lots of colours. It’s a bit early to plant them yet, but buy them now while stocks are good – some colours sell out fast! And of course we have a full range of composts and soil improvers from farmyard manure, John Innes composts, peat and peat free multipurpose, to chipped bark, willow mulch and garden mulch.
Pop in and see us – you’ll be surprised at the range of stock we carry!
